Hilsea Bus Depot granted Planning Permission
The all-new First Bus Hilsea Bus Depot has been granted planning permission by Portsmouth City Council, transforming the former News site in Hilsea, Portsmouth
The new depot will operate 100 zero-emission electric buses across the wider city. The buses will be powered by 100% renewable energy and the depot will self-generate power from a large rooftop photovoltaic array. The move will be a huge leap forward for colleagues, customers and the local environment saving 5000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. The project represents a £20M+ First Bus investment as part of their commitment to future bus services in Portsmouth.
Janus Architecture has designed the depot layout to the latest safety standards, with no-reverse parking, clear lanes to key routes, raised safety walkways to the perimeter, and overhead drop-down vehicle chargers to remove trailing cables. Two main buildings will be provided on the site, the largest being a maintenance workshop with admin areas facing London Road, and a maintenance facility behind to service the fleet. A service lane building is to be located further into the site with facilities for both bus and chassis washing, as well as an ATF testing facility. 3rd Party car charging will also be provided for public use.
Works on site are due to start in Autumn 2024 with a completion Autumn 2025
